EMMA RIEMERSMA - STYLIST & MULTIHYPHENATE

EMMA RIEMERSMA - STYLIST & MULTIHYPHENATE

WELCOME TO ANOTHER ISSUE OF 'EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN' WHERE WE BRING YOU CONVERSATIONS WITH EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN AND DELVE INTO PHENOMENAL CAREERSPERSONAL STYLE, MOMENTS AND EVENTS THAT SHAPE THEIR LIVES, PASSIONS AND SUCCESSES, CHALLENGES AND LESSONS THEY'VE LEARNT.

FOR OUR LATEST ISSUE WE CHAT WITH STYLIST, PRODUCER, HMUA & FASHION EDITOR EMMA REIMERSMA. EMMA IS A TRUE MULTIHYPHENATE WORKING ACROSS MULPTIPLE CREATIVE DISCIPLINES. I'VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH EM AND SHE HAS ALSO BECOME DEAR FRIEND TO ME, I'M EXCITED TO SHARE HER STORY HERE & I HOPE YOU ENJOY OUR CONVERSATION AS MUCH AS I DID.

LANAMARA (LM): Em, welcome! It's so lovely to chat with you and thank you for being our 'Extraordinary Woman'. You know how incredibly talented I think you are and you've been a part of our story from our very first photoshoot that you styled. For our readers tell us a little more about your career background?

EMMA REIMERSMA (ER): With over 30 years in the beauty, hair, fashion, and styling industry, I’ve had the privilege of working with international brands, teaching and mentoring in my fields, freelancing across creative projects, and most importantly—connecting with everyday people to help them feel confident and good within themselves. Creativity has always been my compass, and this industry has been the perfect canvas.

The true highlight of my career came 11 years ago when I stepped into the role of Fashion Editor at SALIFE. It was the perfect blend of everything I love—media, fashion, styling, and the creative freedom to collaborate with incredible brands and honing my skills as a visual artist, all while designing a career that fit around my young family. That balance has been one of the greatest blessings of all: to do work I love, with people who trust me, while still being present for the people who matter most.

I’ve always believed that good style starts with good energy—and I’m grateful every day to be doing work that lights me up and (hopefully!) makes others feel a little more fabulous too.

LM: We’ve had the pleasure of working together on some of our photoshoots and you have been such an amazing support to our brand, what’s your favourite Lanamara piece?

ER: Lanamara is my spirit animal. My biggest passions in life—culture, travel, food, and seeing the world through fresh eyes—are all wrapped up in your brand's energy. While I technically work in the fashion industry, my heart really belongs to style—and for me, style is all about discovering your essence, what makes you feel good, and expressing that joyfully (preferably with great earrings).

Lanamara jewellery has this incredible way of infusing a little magic into the everyday. It brings that free-spirited, bohemian feeling into your life—even when you’re just doing the school run or running to the shops. It’s wearable joy.

As for a favourite piece? That’s a bit like asking me to choose a favourite child. But if I had to, I’d say the Clover earrings and choker. They add such rich texture to any outfit, but are also effortless—just throw them on and go, no overthinking required.

LM: You are the ultimate multihyphenate Em, from fashion, interiors, food, product and personal styling, creative direction, talent and location sourcing, hair and makeup artist, and fashion and homeware sourcing & buying. It’s a long list of talents. What does a ‘day in the life’ look like for you?

ER: I suppose this says a lot about me: while I love to embody calm serenity, I also secretly thrive on the thrill of chaos and high-pressure moments. Some days you’ll find me in my sun-drenched home office, peacefully mapping out creative direction for a brand shoot, curating fashion and jewellery for my magazine pages, selecting talent and scouting the perfect location—or maybe sourcing tiny trinkets to help tell the story of a wine label. No two days are the same, and I absolutely love that.

And then… there's shoot day. Friends and colleagues often comment on how calm I seem. (Bless them.) Meanwhile, below the surface, I’m paddling like a duck on double espresso—quiet above, full throttle underneath. The truth is, I care deeply about every project I touch. I treat each one as if it were my own, because I want it to be brilliant, meaningful, and beautifully executed. Passion looks a lot like calm chaos—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

LM: You're such a creative person. How do you bring creativity into your life outside work, or is it something you need to switch off from to regenerate?

The lines between work and home life? Let’s just say they’re more of a soft blur than a hard divide. Because I mostly work from home, I’m constantly bouncing between client ideas, personal projects, and whatever creative spark decides to strike while I’m halfway through making lunch. For me, it’s less of a job and more of a way of life—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m incredibly lucky to be surrounded by wonderful friends—many of whom are creatives themselves, like artists who bring fresh energy and inspiration into my world. And the dear friends who aren’t necessarily creative still share my passions for travel, food, and experiencing art in all its forms (with a good glass of wine, of course).

And then there’s my beautiful little family—my husband and two kids—who are the absolute heart of it all. We love to travel, eat, explore culture, and soak up new experiences together. That’s what fills my cup.

Our home is my sanctuary. My husband and I collect art and special pieces from our travels as traveling is our shared passion, we lived in the south of France and travelled Europe and Morocco for the year in 2010. We also have a bit of a love affair with mid-century furniture. Our walls are filled with artwork and family photos—a little gallery of our life—and it brings me so much happiness and joy. It’s a space that feels truly us… slightly chaotic, deeply loved, and full of stories.

LM: Of the many and varied creative services you offer, what is your favourite thing to do?

Over the past 10 years, I’ve really honed in on what I do best—and, as a result, my creative offerings have become more focused. These days, I primarily work as a stylist, creative director, and producer across a wide range of photo shoot projects, which keeps things endlessly interesting.

With my love of food, I especially enjoy food styling—curating every detail needed to bring those delicious shots to life. But whether it’s wine, jewellery, fashion, personal branding or anything in between, what I really love is the storytelling. That’s the heart of it for me. As a stylist, you’re not just putting pretty things in place—you’re translating a thought, a feeling, or an emotion into something visual and tangible. Also pulling together a wonderful team of people as it is always a collaboration.

Right now, I’m also working on a new visual art project of my own—something deeply personal and creatively fulfilling. I’m very excited about it and can’t wait to share more as it gets closer to launch… stay tuned!

LM: What’s one of the most creative or inspiring jobs you’ve worked on?

It’s honestly a bit impossible to choose the most creative or inspiring job I’ve ever worked on—there have been so many, and I’ve loved each one for completely different reasons (kind of like shoes… how can you pick just one favourite?).

But I do have to say, creating the fashion pages each month for SALIFE is a constant joy. Every issue brings a fresh idea, a new creative direction, and the chance to work in incredible locations with truly wonderful people. It never feels the same twice—and that’s what keeps it exciting.

None of it would be possible without the trust and support of SALIFE’s fabulous editor, Liz Walsh, who gives me the creative freedom and flexibility to do what I do. That kind of trust is rare—and it’s the reason I get to bring big ideas to life, month after month, with a huge smile on my face.

LM: Have you studied any of the disciplines that you specialise in or was it self taught/on the job?

I’ve definitely done my fair share of formal study in each area of my work—education and upskilling are so important. But honestly, most of my real learning has happened on the job, working alongside some of the best minds in the industry. Over the past 20 years, I’ve made a conscious effort to surround myself with people who are truly exceptional at their craft—and it’s been the best classroom I could ask for.

One little rule I’ve set for myself: always have both older and younger mentors. The seasoned pros bring a wealth of wisdom and experience that you simply can’t rush or replicate. As for younger creatives, they bring fresh eyes, bold ideas, and a perspective that constantly keeps me inspired and evolving.

I think both are equally important. After all, the best kind of learning is the kind that keeps you curious—and ideally laughing a little along the way.

LM: You darling daughter Magnolia was recently diagnosed with Crohns disease, I know this has been such a challenging and emotional time for you. Are you happy to share a little about this journey?

Wow—it's always hard not to tear up when I think about the past two years. Two years ago, our bright, energetic, full-of-life daughter was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Overnight, it felt like our world flipped. She went from being this radiant, bouncing ball of joy to incredibly unwell and heart-wrenchingly sad. Watching her go through that was devastating—and frustrating, too—because Crohn’s is such a complex, difficult disease to treat. There is still so much we need to learn and improve through medical research.

She still has good days and tough days. Crohn’s is an invisible illness, so most people see a gorgeous, happy girl with a sparkle in her eye—but they don’t see the exhaustion, the pain, or the long days spent in hospital hooked up to a drip, or yet another specialist appointment.

In the early days, the grief is paralysing. You mourn the future you imagined for your child—the carefree childhood, the adventures, the simplicity. But now, two years in, we've found our rhythm. We've learnt to take it in stride. Thanks to advances in medicine and technology, I’m hopeful that by the time she’s in her twenties, there’ll be far better treatment options for this debilitating autoimmune condition.

Our family is proud to advocate for more awareness and research through the Australian Crohn’s & Colitis Association. It’s become a passion project with purpose.

This journey has been a great clarifier. It’s shown us who our true friends are—the ones who show up, love hard, and understand the depth of what we’re facing. And it’s made me more grateful than ever for the work I do. My career brings me creativity, joy, and flexibility, allowing me to be there with my daughter when she needs me—whether it’s a sick day at home or a full day in hospital.

Life has thrown us some curveballs, but it’s also revealed so much love and strength. I truly feel blessed to walk this path with my incredible husband Zach by my side. Together, as a family, we face the hard days—but also celebrate the beautiful ones—and we never stop hoping for brighter ones ahead.

LM: So this year we both join the 50 club, how does this make you feel?

To be honest, I’m in complete denial about turning 50. I remember finding out I was pregnant with my daughter Magnolia at 38 (she’s now 11!) and then again with my son Phoenix at 40—and thinking, Surely I’m too young for this?! Clearly, denial has been a bit of a theme in my life.

The past five years have brought their share of challenges—family health issues and the heartbreaking loss of my darling dad. But looking back, I feel incredibly grateful. I’m surrounded by beautiful people, have had the joy of travelling to amazing places, and somehow, in the whirlwind of it all, I’ve landed in a place of real appreciation.

Over the last year, my husband and I made a conscious decision to focus on our health and wellbeing—and it’s made such a difference. I feel strong, energised, and (dare I say it?) fabulous. So yes… I’m 50. Still slightly in denial, but also feeling pretty damn great about it.

LM: At 50 I think we really step into our female energy, we know what makes us feel good and we have the courage to say no to things that don’t align. What would you tell your younger self now?

Completely agree with you, Marika—we’re at a stage where we’re choosing what truly aligns with us and what feels right for our lives. I have such a strong sense of values, and being authentic, kind, trustworthy, and a genuinely good human is incredibly important to me.

If I could go back and whisper something to my younger self (besides maybe, “lay off the over-plucking!”), it would be this: Know your worth. Trust your gut. Stop trying to please everyone. You’re already enough—more than enough. Love and accept yourself exactly as you are, because you are a good person, and that matters more than anything.
